Bloop / Byrd Out / AbletonFrom: Nairobi, KenyaE:

Nairobi based producer and field sound artist, KMRU, is notable for making intelligent atmospheric and emotionally evocative electronic music.

KMRU works to inject a dose of experimentation and space in his music. Giving a personal touch using everything from gritty indigenous sounds to field recordings or intricate sonic landscapes. KMRU is also a DJ, and his mixes share a similar philosophy, where the music often has an elegiac quality of sounds, Foleys, and field recordings, sometimes accompanied with a pulsing slice of atmospheric techno suggesting a more cinematic approach. Already earmarked by Resident Advisor as one of ’15 East African Artists You Need To Hear’, KMRU is truly pioneering in the East African electronic music scene and breaking borders with his ambient sounds. He is a regular of the legendary Nyegenyege Festival since 2017 to date and has also presented his live performances and DJ sets at Bayimba Festival, Africanouveau, and EarthDance among other shows in East Africa and abroad.

KMRU made quite an impression this year, selected to participate at the Music Makers Hacklab, CTM Festival, also appearing on the latest We Are Friends compilation from Deadmau5 label Mau5trap and currently released his latest Erased EP on London label, Byrd Out. KMRU also debuted his NTS Radio Show exploring field recordings, ambient and experimental music from his unreleased. Aside from his music production, KMRU has also been presenting a monthly show on Bloop since 2018 and now running the Nairobi Ableton User Group as well as composing for films and documentaries both locally and internationally.
